Pink Diamonds

Natural pink diamonds aren’t very common they only account for about 1% of the total production of diamonds in the world. 

Pink diamonds are 100% natural, when the rough stone is found, there is a pinkish hue to the color of the stone. Depending on the intensity of the color and the cut of the stone, the outcome of the stone is usually breathtaking.

The majority of these come from the Australian Argyle diamond mine which produces more than 90 percent of the world’s natural pink diamonds. 

While we do know how colored diamonds get their color - blue diamonds get their color from traces of the boron, the displacement of carbon atoms creates green diamonds but to this day it is unclear how pink diamonds get their unique colour. The theroy is that while the diamond is forced to the Earth's surface, the structure of the diamond somehow becomes altered, causing a deformation. This flaw forces the stone to absorb light differently and emit the pink hue.

The lighter the pink tone, the less rare is the diamond. Heavily saturated pure pinks and purplish pinks are dear to collectors, with prices reflecting their rarity and desirability.
